History of SMC
Founded in 1953
By John Harvey Maple
Born 1877 - Died 1961
In August of 1953, the Maple family opened a portion of their land to about 40 young people for a Bible based camp. The first campers were from the Kingman area. They payed $7.50 for a week of Bible study, fun, good food, and developed friendships that have lasted a lifetime. The camp was scheduled by the time of the full moon. They did this because there was no electricity. The campers had it rough. They had to wash their own dishes and there were no showers. They had to sleep in tents and in the back of trucks. The counselors were the area preachers and their wives. There have been many people involved in the camp over the years. We would love to hear from anyone that has some history of the camp that they would like to share. We would like to know about the early years of the camp, the directors, counselors, campers, and helpers. Any history, experiences, friendships or life changes that you would like to share.
